Every advertisement has a certain appeal to it in order to sell. In our ad we chose a humour approach. This is because a humour approach catches the viewers attention easily and are often replayed in our minds when we are in the same scenario as shown in the advertisement.

"These appeals are very suitable in attracting the attention of the audience, these are easily remembered" (Theren, 2010, p.126). The second appeal we went for was the Feature Appeal. It states the main purpose of the product, which in this case, is to help students study more efficiently. We hoped that it will show the audience, which are students, that this product can help them during those gruesome study sessions.

Finally, we chose the comfort appeal. For an example, it shows the happiness of the customer in the ad as he is able to study and come up with amazing ideas after drinking the product. It shows the viewers that this product is the solution to all their problems and gives the viewers the impression that if they are ever stuck with difficult questions the answer is a good drink (in this case our product). This advertisement also has a hidden message whereby it says instead of drinking alcohol when you have “problems” drink our product instead.

Our group's ad appeals to both the emotional and logic approach. We made the features of the product more prominent. As in, we showed the student getting energized after having our product. We also portrayed the humour approach, in which a drink can help you immediately excel in studying.

We provided a problem that everyone would face and provided the solution in the end. "This tactic presents the viewer with a problem to be solved and the solution is provided by the advertiser's product" (Lee, Johnson, 1999, p.181)

Feature Article: Starbucks at Taylor's

There are 5 news values which makes something news worthy. They are as follows; timeliness, which means whether the news is happening now or not. Proximity, to see whether the news is happening around them or not, people used to read the news which is near to their living area. Prominence, to see whether it is related to a famous places or person or not. Human interest, to know whether the news will affected the readers or the public much or not. Economic, to see whether it really benefited the nation economic or not.

We chose Starbucks for our news article, mainly because Starbucks is the only standard coffee shop inside the campus, Starbucks is also famous in worldwide so we believe everybody will know that place for sure and they will always get a chance to go there for a drink, enjoy their free Wifi service and basically relax there. The article is mainly about students who study there due to the many factors that contribute towards the highly visited upon coffee shop of the campus. Starbucks, was a perfect subject for our feature writing because it almost fulfilled all five of the news values. Due to it's conveniently placed location, at the heart of the commercial zone of Taylor's Uni, the proximity aspect has been covered. It is also prominent as the popularity of Starbucks is well known among students. The coffee shop's branding and place of congregation also serves as a point of human interest for the students of Taylor's University as well.

To conclude, Starbucks perhaps can be considered a phenomena and interesting article to write about due to the many different reasons and people who visit it on an almost daily basis, making it one of the most popular place for students to meet at.

Printing Press & Publications Act 1984

Introduction

The Printing Press and Publications Act 1984 is an act that was authorized by the Parliament and signed by the Yang Di - Pertuan Agong at the time to grant power to the Home Affairs Minister to control and run all printing press and publications in the nation.

Content of the Act

The Act provides that it is a criminal offense to possess or use a printing press without a licence granted by the Home Affairs Minister.

The Minister is given "absolute discretion" in the granting and revocation of licences, and can also restrict or ban outright publications that is likely to endanger national security interest or create social unrest; making the minister the sole authority of what and when anything is published in the country.

Should one possess or use an unlicensed printing press, he may be imprisoned for up to three years and/or fined up to RM20,000. A deposit made under Section 10 of the Act will also be forfeited in such a case.

The Home Affairs Minister is given "absolute discretion" to grant, revoke or suspend permits "to any person to print and publish a newspaper in Malaysia" or "to any proprietor of any newspaper in Singapore allowing such newspaper to be imported, sold, circulated or distributed in Malaysia."

Permits are normally granted for the period of one year, and cannot be transferred without the permission of the Minister.

Should one print, import, publish sell, circulate or distribute — or even offer to do any of those things — a newspaper without a permit from the Minister, it will be deemed an offense punishable by up to three years in jail and/or a fine of up to RM20,000.

Post Amendment

The amended Act, currently in force, not only regulates the press and publications, but also, in Section 9(1), regulates books, pamphlets and the import of publications from abroad. The possible reasons for a ban are extensive, but ill defined:
'…any publication which he is satisfied contains any article, caricature, photograph, report, notes, writing, sound, music, statement or any other thing which is likely o be prejudiced to public order, morality, security, the relationship with any foreign country or government, or which is likely to alarm public opinion, or which is likely to be contrary to any law or is otherwise prejudicial or is likely prejudicial to public interest or national interest.'

-The minister has absolute discretion to determine the fate of presses and publications, with decision not subject to judicial review. Under Section 13A, courts are instructed that they cannot question ministers’ decisions on any grounds whatsoever. The government also has wide powers of seizure over printing presses and publications.

-Amendments stipulate that the minister had the discretion to define offences under the category of publishing malicious “false news”. Action can be taken against any press outlet or publication if their writing is defined as not taking “reasonable measures” to verify the truth of the news.

Criticism
Crictism on PPA 1984
- Implies that it empowers the Minister to exercise virtually total control over the print media.
- intensified after a 1987 amendment to the Act established an ouster clause preventing actions of the Home Affairs Minister from being called into question by the courts.

Cases
Lim Guan Eng v Public Prosecutor(1998)

This is the appeal case of Lim Guan Eng, who had been convicted for 18 months of imprisonment and fined under

1)S 8A (1) Printing Presses and the Public Act 1984 for maliciously publishing false news in the form of a pamphlet entitled ‘Mangsa Dipenjarakan’

2) S 4 (1) (b) Sedition Act 1948 for making a speech which contained seditious words regarding the non-prosecution of an alleged rape case involving Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik.

Lim Guan Eng was charged under Section 8A (1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 for 'maliciously printing' a pamphlet containing allegedly 'false information' because he had described the alleged rape victim as an 'imprisoned victim' because she was initially detained by Malaysian police without parental consent for 10 days. During the judicial procedure, Lim was quoted saying:
“ If I fail and have to go to jail, I have no regrets. I have no regrets of going down fighting for the principles of truth and justice. And pursuit of human rights, especially women's rights. There can be no women's rights if women rape victims are considered equally responsible, and even detained, whilst the accused remain free. ”

How Far Does The Photoshop Hole Go?

How Far Does The Photoshop Hole Go?

Media should not digitally manipulate or alter magazine covers or photographs, especially when the person is very famous and very well known to the public, because it may create a misunderstanding to the public, readers may have negative thoughts concerning the particular person if the magazine provide the wrong information to the public.

Manipulating celebrity photos for advertising purposes will also shows disrespect to the person, furthermore the person can sue the magazine for copyrights, magazines should seek the permission of the celebrities to see whether they can digitally manipulate their photo for advertising use or not.

For example, in the article "Fan Art or False advertising," Kate Middleton’s photo has been digitally manipulate and it was shown in the cover of Marie Claire.

http://shine.yahoo.com/fashion/fan-art-false-advertising-marie-claires-fake-kate-180400016.html

Another is the New Republic magazine who edited the smile of Kate Middleton and made her teeth look rotten.

http://shine.yahoo.com/beauty/kate-middleton-pictured-rotten-teeth-outraged-reaction-164700255.html

These pictures will result in a  negative impact towards the royal family as much as it would affect readers themselves. It may leave a bad impression to the public and readers as Kate Middleton has rejected posing for the cover of the magazine and yet the magazine still got her photo and even went as far as putting it on their cover.

You can see how some readers might misunderstand the Duchess and think negatively of her.

The magazine might get sued by the Duchess as the magazine did not get her permission to alter her photo. All this will also create a very bad image for the Duchess especially when the New Republic magazine published all the altered photos of the fake teeth.

The magazines can digitally manipulate and alter celebrities photo only when they have the permission to do so from the celebrities, if the celebrities do not have problem with it then only they are permitted to do so. Another situation is when the celebrities are supposed to do a pose for the magazines but he/she might be busy so the magazines are allowed to rip and paste a replacement photo.

From the article, 'Fan Art or False Advertising', I think it is a false advertising, as it shows no respect to the celebrities and also to the public, the magazine should seek the permission of the celebrities whether they can digitally alter the photo or not, if they don't do so they might land in serious trouble especially when they mess with the Duchess of Cambridge!

Digitally Better, Old Fashionably Preferred: A Look Into Digital Online Newspaper

It’s quick, up-to-date and portable. It’s the online newspapers of the 21st century. So what makes the online newspapers more popular than its ancestor the print?

Most people will agree on ONE very common factor which makes this giant leap of mankind one of the greatest inventions of all time, it’s easily accessible by everyone, everywhere, anytime.

http://www.marketingcharts.com/wp/print/newspaper-website-audience-up-16-in-q3-engagement-at-record-levels-6531/

Some of interesting experiences gained while reading an online newspaper was namely because it was that the updates were spot on fast.

Though it may lead to a disadvantage of inaccuracy the online papers are well known for its speed of reports.

Another notable fact is that it is eco-friendly.

These types of reports are all on the web so there is no hassle for printing and wasting our resources. A wonderful practice for those of us who are striving to go green and save some pocket money.

Online newspapers are also very handy due to the fact that it is easily archived. We can search as far back as we want into history and attain the results with just a click of a button. No need for extra storage or a library.

It also provides us with the alternative range of options of sharing the information we have read or stumbled across on with other people using social sites such as Facebook and Twitter. That way news travels within a blink of an eye.

Last but not least, online newspapers provide us with a large source of information which can be linked to one another through the internet. The articles read can be further covered or followed up through links that are displayed by the side bar.

This way, readers will have a complete overview on the news that is being covered.

In short, online newspapers provide us with a wide range of advantages but in contrast with the print newspapers in terms of accuracy and dependable sources it is still way lacking.

Therefore, online newspapers will be summarized as a means for breaking news and entertainment rather than political causes and investigations.

Tale of a Fighter

The youngest of nine children, Mark Wahlbergh was born in Boston, Massachusetts and is a famous American actor. (Biography 2012) He was a troubled street gang affiliated teenager during his teenage life and has been charged for attempted murder, pled guilty to assault for knocking a Vietnamese man unconscious with a stick as well as attacking another Vietnamese man causing him to be permanently blind in one eye. (Monte B2012) He had a brief relatively successful music career before starting his acting career in 1993. Since then, he has never looked back and has had a successful career as an actor.

A celebrity who is often in the lime light, Wahlberg is a man who still puts his family first and sets an inspirational example for many young men and women. As a loving husband and father of four kids, he hopes to teach his children to always be grateful and that there are many people out there who are less fortunate than them his examples were to be followed by young career related busy parents, a stressful family situation can be avoided. He is a good role model of a parent and teaches many to always put your family first and set good principles for them to follow.

The actor is also actively involved in charity and in 2001 he established the Mark Wahlberg Foundationfor raising funds and distributing them to various youth enrichment programs. (MarkWahlbergYouthFoundation 2012) He is also served on the Honorary Board of a children charity organization. (Eliot SP 2012) In my opinion, another way that Mark Wahlberg could contribute to society would be to give talks to troubled youths about how it’s never too late to turn a new leaf and show that he is living proof of it.

For a world that now suffers from a lack of value in many societies, a lot of young adults and teenagers alike are looking for someone they can look up to. Who else then, would be better suited for that role than a prominent public figure? Especially one who had a troubled youth and rose up to be a star in the end, it is a story that inspires hope in many of us.

Social network users are everywhere.

Even in the toilet people are still browsing through their social networks while doing their “business”. Examples of social networks that are always used by people nowadays are Facebook, twitter, instagram, keek and etc.

However today, we will be focusing on Facebook.
But why do people choose facebook as their main social network?

The reasons behind it is simple, it helps us connect. It may be to make new friends or to stay close to family. Other than that, we can also share our interest with the others. We can share music, pictures and interesting facts with each other just by a click of a button.
The last reason that I came up with is that Facebook is a place to share our thoughts and information. For an example, many politicians have been using Facebook to inform their voters about their new policies. And we, as the public are able to give our feedback.

As usual, all good things must have a bad side.

People use Facebook without realizing the consequences. When we sign up for an account, we provide our basic information which will then be seen by others.

This provides a way for hackers to get our personal information and may even get hold of our bank accounts! Besides that, whatever we post online can be seen by others.

Which means that, every single photograph taken or status update can viewed by anyone, anywhere at any time. Potential bosses may even find out about all those wild nights you used to have in the past!

Finally, cyber bullying can occur if we are not careful of what we say online.
Our whereabouts can be easily found out if we constantly use the check in function on Facebook. This means that, a stalker can easily find you just by looking at your profile!
They might hack your account just to get our information so that they can use as their own. It can also be conclude as identity theft. Notice how Facebook’s design constantly changes?

Well, so does your privacy settings. Every time Facebook redesigns, your privacy settings change back to default.

Which means everything’s public.

So how do you protect your own account?

Well thats easy. First thing’s first you need to set your account to private so that strangers can’t see your personal information. You can also change password once in awhile to avoid from being hack by somebody, especially after logging in using a public pc.

Last but not least, it is important to not check in to every single place that you go to which means stop giving unimportant information to strangers so that they can’t detect you and find you if they wish too!

The 6 Gratification of Media Use.

Gratification of Media Use is a term coined by a number of prior communication theories and research conducted by fellow theorists such as Herta Herzong, Abraham Maslow, and Wilbur Schramm alongside many others.

There are 6 Gratifications of Media use as explained by Joseph R. Dominick in his book, The Dynamics of Mass Communication: Media in the Digital Age.

The first one is Diversion

Diversion is another basic need for human beings. It can take many forms, but all forms converge into one purpose - to divert ones attention from every day stressful activities and return them to a different mind state.

There are 3 types of some of the forms identified by researchers:

1) Stimulation: seeking relief from boredom and routine activities of every day life.

2) Relaxation, or escape from the pressures and problems of day-to-day experience.

3) Emotional release of pent up emotion and energy.

The second one, is Stimulation: seeking relief from boredom and the routine activities of everyday life.

As many have experienced, everyday routine can take it's toll and boredom can begin to engulf ones mind. Time seems to slow down as the the clock ticks away at a snails pace, inching towards the second you are allowed to get off work.

This is when stimulation is needed to awaken and entertain the minds of they who are severely bored by the uses of mobile games, social media, web surfing or videos posted on the internet.

As a member of our group has experienced with Stimulation, she believes that for her its playing the keyboard. Although she's not good at it, it give her a sense of peace and it keeps her occupied for a short while just to past my time. It's engaging and helps me to improve my playing skills every time i attempt to play it.

The second one is  relaxation, or escape from the pressures and problems of day-to-day experience. To get out of a stressful situation and find yourself in a state of serenity is something that many strive to get after a long week of handwork. That is classified as Relaxation.

The third one is emotional release of pent up emotion and energy. As work begins to mount up, relationships are tested, patience is strained thin - it becomes necessary for one to find an output for any sort of pent up emotion that may linger in a person. Emotional release of those emotions can come from anything like physical exercise,  or going to a concert or rock show.

The second one is Relaxation: An escape from the pressures and problems of day-to-day experience.

To get out of a stressful situation and find yourself in a state of serenity is something that many strive to get after a long week of handwork.  In the words of Dominick, "too much stimulation, however, is undesirable. psychological experiments have indicated that human beings are negatively effects by sensory information and stimulation are present in the environment . when faces with sensory overload people tend to seek relief."

To unwind and indulge in life's pleasure for that quick moment in time where you can forget the outside world is pure bliss - a reward for those who have spent their time stressing out over work, family and other responsibilities.

one of the experiences another member of our group has experience in relation to relaxation was when he woke p late for a presentation. He immediately rushed to the classroom and to his disbelief, his tutor wasn't there! in fact, his presentation was postponed - allowing him to relax a little and enjoy a day of leisure instead.

Fourth one is emotional release of pent up emotion and energy.

As work begins to mount up, relationships are tested, patience is strained thin - it becomes necessary for one to find an output for any sort of pent up emotion that may linger in a person. Emotional release of those emotions can come from anything like physical exercise,  or going to a concert or rock show.

Our editor of the week explains his experience with emotional release:

"Everyone has had their own share of accidents on the road and most of the time they are just minor things and will never be more. Starting out with a 'P' license, you feel as if you're already a competent driver but I have since been shown otherwise. One of these lessons happened just outside Taylor's College Subang Jaya where I used to study.

Now it is usually peak hour whenever I leave my college and I so happened to have parked right at the entrance of my college where it's basically a bottle neck of cars and bikes squeezing through.

To make things worse on that very day I was dropping a female friend home and there was a car waiting next to my parking spot. As I reversed out and he made way, I had very little space to straighten my car. To make matters worse my car has a terrible turning radius.

A sudden thud sent adrenal glands into overdrive mode and I realized I had just backed into a car waiting behind me. The embarrassment and worry wrecked havoc in me as I got down from my car despite my friend asking me to 'floor it'. Expecting the worst I held my breath and prepared to explain to my parents everything. Fortunately though there was barely any damage on the other car and the aunty was nice enough to let me go without much of a fuss.

Thanks to that incident, I tend to have a 'spidey sense' whenever I drive on the road especially when I'm reversing from a parking spot. A big sigh of relief couldn't be any bigger."

The fifth one is Social utility: the set of social integrative needs, including our need to strengthen our contact with family, friends, and others in society.

Social conversations are what create a strong bond with our family or peers. things like what they have read, seen or heard are considered a social conversation. They create a bridge of understanding or a feeling of having something common with one another - further strengthening the bond of two people.

A quick example would be like watching a movie on a date as it helps bond two strangers somewhat closer than before.

Another group member of ours, Stephanie, explains her experience in bonding with a family member through Social Utility:

"I grew up spending most of my time by myself. Even though I had an elder brother, we are 9 years apart and he soon moved to Ukraine to study and I was left all alone. Therefore, I felt a need for constant companionship.

To me, it's always better to share those important moments in life with someone. I went to my first concert with my cousin that used to constantly annoy me when I was little.

As we grew up we were not that close to each other. When I had extra tickets to the concert, no one wanted to go with me as they had no idea who the band was! Then, I remembered that my cousin likes them. I decided to ask her even though I had no idea how it would turn up to be. We ended going together and that experience brought us closer together.

We bonded on the fact that we had the same taste in music and realized we kinda had the same personality. We are now inseparable. She's like the sister I never had. In conclusion, the good things are always better when shared with someone."

The last one would be Withdrawal: Using mass media to create a barrier between themselves and other people or activities. For example, the media help people avoid certain chores, as children are quick to learn.

Some people use the media to create a buffer zone between themselves and others. It creates a safe haven from the outside world when you've had enough of it or simply would like to be left alone as you are and go along with your life with nothing to bug you.

A good example would  when you are riding a bus or sitting in a public place and do not want to be disturbed - you bury yourself your head in a book, magazine or newspaper. or music.

that is an example of withdrawal from society.

Within my experience with Withdrawal would be when i'm simply fed up with people and their nuisances. I'd lock myself in my room and listen classical music and paint or draw or anything of the sort in order to simply be on my own and do what i feel is best for me.

Sometimes i'd even watch a movie and spend hours going through my "Must-watch" movie list. It's a great way to go out on an adventure without even having to set my foot out the door!

it's quite a wonderful way of simply taking a break from society.
